Where to Watch the Sunset in Hancock County

The best spots to catch a Gulf Coast sunset in Hancock County, from beaches to waterfront parks.

Where to Watch the Sunset in Hancock County

The Mississippi Gulf Coast faces south, which means sunsets here do not drop straight into the water the way they do on Florida’s west coast. Instead, the sun sinks toward the west over marshes, bays, and bridges, painting the sky in wide bands of orange, pink, and purple that reflect off the calm Gulf waters. Hancock County has some of the best vantage points on the entire coast.

Beach Boulevard, Bay St. Louis

The stretch of Beach Boulevard along the Bay of St. Louis is the most popular sunset spot in the county, and for good reason. The seawall provides a front-row seat, with the bay spreading out to the south and the sky opening up to the west. On clear evenings, the colors reflect off the water and the Bay Bridge adds a dramatic silhouette to the scene. Bring a chair or simply sit on the seawall wall. Several restaurants and bars along the boulevard have patios facing the water, so you can pair your sunset with a cold drink and fresh seafood.

Waveland Beachfront

The Waveland beach along Highway 90 offers a wider, less crowded perspective. The flat horizon and open sky create an expansive canvas. Park along the road, walk down to the sand, and face west. In the warmer months, the sunset comes late enough that you can spend the whole afternoon at the beach and end the day with the show.

Buccaneer State Park

The shoreline at Buccaneer State Park catches the same light as the Waveland beach but with the added benefit of pine trees and picnic areas framing the view. If you are camping, the sunset from your site near the water is one of those moments that makes the trip memorable. The park is less busy in the evenings, giving it a quiet, almost private feel.

Bay St. Louis Harbor

The municipal harbor in Bay St. Louis is a working waterfront with shrimp boats, sailboats, and charter vessels. Watching the sunset from the docks, with the masts of boats silhouetted against the fading sky, has a different character than the beach views. It feels more connected to the life of the town.

The Bay Bridge

Driving across the Bay Bridge between Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian at sunset is a stunning experience, though keep your eyes on the road. For a safer option, pull over at one of the access points near the bridge approach and watch from solid ground. The elevation gives you a panoramic view of the bay and the sky.

Pearl River, Pearlington

For a sunset with a completely different mood, head to Pearlington. The Pearl River here is wide, slow, and lined with cypress trees. The light filters through the trees and reflects off the dark water in a way that feels more like Louisiana bayou country than the Gulf Coast. It is quieter and more remote, and the sunset here belongs to you and the herons.

Making the Most of It

Sunset times shift throughout the year, so check before you head out. Arrive at least thirty minutes early to settle in. The best colors often come in the minutes after the sun has dropped below the horizon, so do not leave too soon. And bring a camera — but also take a few minutes to just watch.
